Dental Anxiety Is Totally Normal–But Not Unavoidable

Posted .

We understand that going to the dentist can be a nerve-wracking thing, especially if you’ve had negative experiences in the past! A past negative experience can create what is called dental anxiety, which makes your future appointments scary.

Our team wants you to have the best dental experience when you come to our office, and we are happy to help you make that happen. We have three tips that may be beneficial for you!

First, bring a comfort item to the appointment. This can be a blanket, a pillow, a picture—anything that might make you feel better in the dental chair. Feel free to listen to your own music or a podcast. Focus more on the words than on the treatment. Definitely feel free to grasp the warmth of your blanket or pillow. Many dental offices also have TVs available for use during procedures or cleanings; go ahead and watch that guilty pleasure show!

Second, find out more about the details about your procedure or cleaning before the procedure. Our dental team will be happy to explain the steps of your upcoming treatment so you can know precisely what to expect. This will help you put at rest any concerns you may have. It can also help you relieve some of the stress you feel.

Third, talk to Dr. Jerry Butler about the possibility of using a dental sedative during your appointment. Sedation dentistry can help you feel calm, relaxed, and comfortable in the hands of our team. This can calm your nerves, soothe anxiety, and take away worries. Talk with our team to see if sedation dentistry is right for you.
