At the dental practice of Jerry L. Butler, D.D.S., M.A.G.D, Dr. Jerry Butler and our team are pleased to help our patients in Boone, North Carolina, with all of your dental needs, including any issues you may currently be having with your bite and jaws.

TMJ is the joint which connects your jaw to your skull–known as the temporomandibular joint. If this joint becomes injured, it can cause pain known as TMJ syndrome. You can bring on TMJ through a variety of factors, such as chewing gum excessively, poor posture, stress, misalignment of the jaw, teeth grinding (whether by day or night), tooth injury, or injury to the jaw.

The effect of TMJ on your health can include pain in the joints of your jaw, as well as clicking and popping in the jaw. You may experience pain in your ears, hear ear popping, have dizziness or vertigo, headaches or migraines, sore or even stiff jaw muscles, pain in your temple, and possibly even the locking of your jaw. And as you may already know, none of these are pleasant!

You can find relief by placing ice packs on the joint, using over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine, reducing your stress, implementing massage and stretches, avoiding chewing gum and sticking to eating soft foods until your jaws heal. Depending on the cause and severity of your TMJ, Dr. Doyle and Dr. Monaco may also recommend the following:

— A mouthguard or nightguard to alleviate teeth grinding, or bruxism.

— Medications such as muscle relaxers which can help your jaw.

— Physical therapy which includes exercises for the jaw.

— Jaw surgery.

If you would like to schedule a consultation with Dr. Jerry Butler and find relief for your TMJ symptoms, please call our team in Boone, North Carolina at (828) 264-5858 today. We are here to help!
