Summer is finally here and with it, travel season! If you are planning a getaway, along with packing your bags it’s a good idea to prepare your smile for the trip too. Prepare to pack the essentials so your pearly whites will be in great shape for all those photos!

Checkup: Prepare your smile to avoid unexpected surprises while you are away. Get a checkup if it’s been more than six months since your last one to give you peace of mind so you can focus on your destination.

Oral Hygiene Kit: While you’re packing your bags, be sure to toss in a toothbrush! If you forget, rinse with water to remove food particles and plaque-causing bacteria, or use your finger or washcloth with some toothpaste, until you can find a brush. Make sure it has soft-bristles and carries the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Transport your toothbrush alone to keep it germ-free, using a traveling toothbrush holder or even a reusable plastic bag. Just air dry in between use and after you return home.

Protect Your Smile & Eardrums: If you are flying, pack some sugarless gum in your carry-on to prevent ear pain during takeoff and landing. Stimulating saliva flow not only lets you swallow as needed but used after meals can remove plaque-building bacteria. As with all dental products, look for the ADA Seal!

Tap vs. Bottled Water: Whether you’re camping or heading out of the country, water is a concern. If you’re not sure of the cleanliness, always use bottled water when cleaning your teeth. If your toothbrush has come in contact with unsafe water, replace it or rinse thoroughly with bottled water.

Emergency Preparation: Despite our best efforts, accidents can happen. Have our dental practice phone number handy so we can help you know what constitutes an emergency and what can’t wait until you see us.

Overseas Emergency Preparation: If you have to see a dentist while you are out of the states, check in with the local U.S. embassy or consulate to find a recommended dentist to see someone qualified.

If you’ve been lax with your oral care while away, be sure to get back into the swing of things. Remember, along with your memories, your pearly whites should last a lifetime! For more information, call us today.
